Travel Scams

Low-cost travel scam protection

Travel scams constitute the fourth most common type of consumer fraud in Canada and the United States, totaling an estimated $12 billion annually.

It's not hard, however, to avoid the most common scams and frauds. You need to know about 'travel common sense". CITC provides you with a definition as well as gives you examples of many travel scams and how to avoid, or react to them For a preview, read about The Cardboard Children of Rome, from Volume 1 of CITC's Scam Watch.

The Scam Watch Booklets are currently sold out but CITC has reprinted 40 Scams for consumers to review before they set off on their travels. In addition Steve Gillick, the author of the Travel Scam booklets is able to conduct presentations to organizations and conferences on Travel Safety. Steve has been featured on CBC's "Fresh Air" and "Ontario Today", CITY TV, the NEW VR, CTS TV, and in many printed articles, including features in the Star and the Globe & Mail.

Plans are underway to create a Travel Scams e-book by year end, 2010.
