To assist the industry in preparing for the TICO Travel Counsellor Exam, CITC will continue to offer Exam preparation courses in the form of Saturday Webinars and Seminars.
The Ontario legislation came into effect on July 1st, 2009, requiring ‘Every person (including supervisors and managers) who is working for a retail travel agency and is selling travel services or providing travel advice to the public to meet the industry’s Education Standard'.
Why a Preparation Course?
The TICO Travel Counsellor Exam is based on the TICO Education Standards Study Manual. While many people will review the material in the Manual on their own and then register with CITC to write the exam, others may see a need for:
- extra preparation in a group-learning atmosphere
- review the Study Manual material
- get a deeper understanding of some aspects of the Travel Industry Act, 2002 and the Regulations
- become more familiar with writing an online multiple-choice exam
- and for those who have simply not had to write an exam in many years, receive some extra coaching on studying and writing the exam
Is the Preparation Course Mandatory?
No. It is strictly an option for the convenience of those who wish to review some key points in the Study Manual in a group learning atmosphere. And of course, there are no guarantees or warranties that by taking a preparation course, an exam candidate will automatically receive a pass mark on the Travel Counsellor Exam.
The courses are meant to build confidence and answer some questions about Study Manual material.
Do I still have to register to write the exam or is it included in the Prep Course?
Yes. You must still register to write the exam--and this is a separate procedure that you may do by visiting the CITC website at www.citc.ca/en/ticoexam
Can I take the Prep Course on a morning and then write the TICO Exam in the afternoon?
Yes but this is not recommended by CITC. It is best to prepare yourself, think about, review the prep course notes and then when you feel good and ready, register to write the exam.
Are there any pre-requisites for me to take the Prep Course? Yes!
- Attendees must pre-register to attend the prep course
- Attendees must have downloaded and read the TICO Study Manual. Please have a copy of the Manual with you during the webinar or seminar so you can review specific sections that are being discussed.
Webinar vs. Seminar:
- A webinar is accessible to everyone, no matter where they reside. There is no need to drive to another city, or face the hassle of driving to a location and paying for parking.
- Most people listen to the webinar on their computer speakers, but there is an option to dial into a toll-free or local phone number to listen. Then watch the rpesentation on your computer screen. It is live and convenient as you can participate in the comfort of your home or cottage or office.
- A seminar is ideal for those who prefer to learn in a group setting, and have the instructor right there to answer those questions from the participants that you may not have even thought about yourself. As many TICO Exam candidates reside in the Greater Toronto Area, the seminar locations are easily accessible by highway and public transit.
