Proctors
You will need a proctor to write the TICO
Education Standards Exam. All candidates should
download the PDF of the Proctor Guide and review
it. A summary of some of the basic information
in the Proctor Guide follows:
What is a Proctor?
A proctor is an impartial 'supervisor' for the
writing of the exam. His or her responsibillity
is to:
- ensure the integrity of the writing of the
exam
- make certain that there are no disruptions
- check the candidate's photo identification
to ensure that they are the actual candidate
registered to write the exam
- make sure that the candidate completes their
own exam
- use established procedures to deal with issues
that may arise during the writing of the exam
Finding a Proctor
Who can proctor the exam?
-
The key to finding a proctor is to ensure
that there is not a conflict of interest
-
'Conflict of Interest' in this context, means
that the Proctor does not work for the same
agency/organization as those who are writing
the exam, and that there is no relationship
between a Proctor and a candidate that could
call into question the impartiality of the Proctor
(e.g. spouse, relative, business partner etc.)
-
The proctor has reviewed the Proctor Guide and understands the important role they play
in the exam process.
Examples of appropriate Proctors
- Someone from outside the industry who fulfills
the following criteria:
- maturity (i.e. the ability to oversee an exam)
- no interest in the subject matter (the person
has no interest in studying or working in the
travel industry)
- no conflict of interest (they have no relatives
or friends in the exam sitting for they are
being asked to proctor)
-
A person who qualifies as a passport guarantor,
as long as this does not pose a conflict of
interest. Please note that the Exam Proctor
qualifications differ from the information on
the passport guarantor website in that, for
the purpose of Proctoring, a relative or spouse
is not acceptable. Passport guarantor guidelines
may be found at http://www.ppt.gc.ca/cdn/section2.aspx
-
A Travel & Tourism Educator, or another
academic whether active or retired, whether
associated with the travel industry or not,
provided there is no conflict of interest. However,
if the Travel &Tourism Educator is required
to write the Travel Counsellor Exam, or chooses
to write this exam, then they must pass the
exam first.
-
A Certified Travel Counsellor or Certified
Travel Manager who does not work for the same
agency or agency chain and has already passed
the Travel Counsellor Exam, provided there is
no conflict of interest. For a list of CTCs
and CTMs in Canada, visit http://www.citc.ca/en/directory
-
An agency manager who does not work for the
same agency or agency chain, and who has already
passed the Travel Counsellor Exam, provided
there is no conflict of interest.
-
A travel counsellor who has already passed
the exam and does not work at the same agency,
provided there is no conflict of interest
-
CITC maintains a list of travel schools throughout
Ontario which can offer a Proctored exam room
from time to time. For a list of schools, along
with the details of the exam writing arrangements,
visit http://www.citc.ca/en/train-tico-proctors-schools-e.asp
-
CITC may be able to suggest a Proctor for
candidates to contact, based on a list of Proctors
used in the past. Contact ticotest@citc.ca
If you are uncertain of the Proctor details when
you register for the TICO Exam, you may SAVE your
information on the Registration form and then
return to it when you are ready. When a proctor
and time for the exam have been arranged, registrants
should register with CITC at least 14
days prior to the exam sitting.
Please Note: CITC looks into all Proctor applications before determining their acceptability. If a candidate wishes to change a Proctor after CITC has already approved one, then CITC requires a minimum of 5 working days to process the new Proctor. If there are not 5 working days left before the scheduled exam date, the candidate may pay an expedited fee of $24.00 + GST to have the new proctor approved in time for the exam, or if it is simply not possible to approve the new Proctor in time, then the matter will be treated as a Re-Schedule
Proctor Guide
Upon receiving your completed Proctor application form CITC will confirm whether the proposed proctor is approved. If not, the candidate will be contacted with suggestions.
CITC may contact the Proctor for further information and to ensure that he/she understands their responsibilities as outlined in the Proctor Guide. On that note, please ensure that your Proctor reads through the full 20 page guide.
