TICO Education Standards
Overview of the Process

TICO - Travel Industry Council of OntarioEvery person in Ontario who is working for a retail travel agency and is selling travel services or providing travel advice to the public must, by law, meet the Industry's Education Standards which came into effect on July 1, 2009. This includes industry Supervisors and Managers.

The second level of the program is for supervisors and managers.  Every travel agency is required to name a Supervisor/Manager on their application for registration or renewal.  This individual is the Supervisor/Manager “on record” with TICO.  The Supervisor/Manager on record with TICO as of June 30th, 2009 will be “grandfathered”and will not be required to take the Supervisor/Manager Exam by July 1, 2009.  An individual that has not been approved as a Supervisor/Manager by TICO and who wishes to act as the Supervisor/Manager on record with TICO on or after July 1, 2009, must write and pass the Supervisor/Manager Exam.

Please note that all supervisors and managers or other individuals who may wish to advance in the industry in the future are welcome and encouraged to take the exam.   A combination exam is available for those wishing to write both the Travel Counsellor and the Supervisor/Manager exams at the same time.

Summary of the Registration Process

There are 3 basic steps to register for your TICO exam:

1) CHOOSE a Proctor

You can choose from one of the approved Proctored Venues that we list on this website OR look for a proctor on your own based on the guidelines provided. You can also contact the CITC's Exam Coordinator (416-484-4450 or 1-800-589-5776 ext. 228) to provide a list of approved Proctors in your specific area.

2) ARRANGE an exam date and time

It's very important that you speak with your proctor to book a date and time. However If you choose to only email the proctor, please make sure they confirm the exam date and time with you before you proceed with Step 3.

3) REGISTER Online

Once Steps 1 and 2 are completed, you must register online at least 14 days in advance of your chosen exam date, by choosing either New Indiviual Registration, New Group Registration or Continue to Register or Register Re-write.

1) Review the FAQs for answers to general questions you may have, and to determine if you have the correct computer setup to receive the exam on-line.

2) Download the Study Manual

a)

Link to the free download of the Study Manual: Candidates may download the Study Manual at no cost from either the CITC or TICO websites. It is available in a PDF version (136 pages). You will need Adobe in order to download the PDF. A link to the free Adobe download is provided.

Note: Candidates should not sit the TICO Education Standard exams without prior study of the Manual.

b)

Hard Copy of the Study Manual: Candidates who prefer to have a hard copy of the Study Manual may order one for an additional $15.00 plus applicable taxes, shipping included..

3)

Read the Proctor information. If you are writing as an individual, you will need to find a proctor. If you are writing in a group (5 or more people in one specific location) then one proctor may be used for the first 25 candidates in the group and one proctor will be required for each additional 15 candidates in the group.

4)

Pick a date to write the exam.

Just a note that the TICO exam may be written any place, any time the candidate chooses. You need a computer, a brower, an internet connection and a proctor. You can write it at your office, in your home or elsewhere--it is up to you. However, if you do choose to write in an agency or office, you must ensure that the proctor can clearly see all the exam candidates at the same time. Venues where people are tucked away in cubicles or offices may need to have 2-3 proctors to supervise the exam. Also, if writing in an office/agency/home, the desks used to write the exam must be clear of all papers, files and books.

As a matter of convenience, TICO and CITC have also arranged for Proctored Venues where candidates may write the exam, if they so choose. Visit the Proctored Venue page and contact the schools directly to make arrangements.

5) Register:
Candidates must register with CITC at 14 days prior to the exam date they have chosen.

Note 1: If you intend to request to have your results sent to a third party (eg Manager or Trainer), then you must submit the Third Party Authorization Form  at the time you register. Forms require a signature and therefore they can be faxed to the CITC office on the same day that you register.

Note 2: If you are requesting any type of a accommodation to address a special need, then you must submit the Special Needs Accommodation Form  at the time you register. Forms require a signature and therefore they can be faxed to the CITC office on the same day that you register.

a)

Individual Registration (for the Travel Counsellor Exam, the Supervisor/Manager Exam, the combination Travel Counsellor and Supervisor/Manager Exam, and for Rewrites).
Fill out all the areas of the form, add in your payment information and press submit. You will receive a confirmation email, along with your Unique TICO Exam Registration Number – which you will need to save and bring with you to the exam (along with government-issued photo identification).

If you do not have the Proctor information yet, and/or you are uncertain about the date on which you will write the exam, you will be able to save the file and come back to it later. When you save the file, you will receive an email with a Unique TICO Exam Registration Number. Use this number, and your email address, to return to the Registration form.

b)

Group Registration
One person should fill out the form for a group. A group is considered to be 5 or more people writing in one specific location. For example, a large company may have 10 staff writing in London, 10 staff writing in Windsor, 10 staff writing in Kitchener etc. Each one of these locations is considered to be "a group" and therefore the company would fill out three separate group registration forms.

If you do not have all the names of the people registering in a group, and/or you have forgotten any of their details (e.g. a date of birth is required as an identifier) then you can save the file and come back to it at another time. When you save the file, you will receive an email that will include a Unique Group TICO Exam Registration Number, which you will require to return to the Registration form.

6)

Payment of Fees: The fee for each candidate registering for the Travel Counsellor Exam is $35.00 plus Applicable Taxes.

The fee for each candidate registering for the Supervisor/Manager Exam is $35.00 plus Applicable Taxes.

The fee for each candidate registering for the combined Travel Counsellor-Supervisor/Manager Exam is $50.00 plus Applicable Taxes.

a)

Payment by Credit Card:
The registration form is linked to a system called "Secure Charge Gateway". The system will automatically process your credit card when you click on "submit". CITC will receive notification when your file is paid and complete. CITC accepts VISA, Mastercard and American Express.

b)

Payment by Cheque:
If you choose to pay by cheque, print the completed registration form, attach a cheque made payable to CITC, and mail the form and the cheque to: CITC, 505 Consumers Road, Ste. 406, Toronto, ON M2J 4V8. Once CITC receives the form and the payment, the file will be processed.

7)

Prepare for the Exam:
Read the Study Manual. If you choose, you may also download the Travel Industry Act, 2002 and Ontario Regulation 26/05 by visiting www.tico.on.ca/news/infonewlegislation.htm. However, all the material you need to study for the Exam(s) is contained in the Study Manual.

Candidates may also wish to review CITC's TICO Exam Strategies Workbook, available free of charge at www.citc.ca/files/TICOExamStrategies.pdf

8)

Confirm your computer equipment meets the requirements and is in good working order.

It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that the proper equipment is available. If you are unsure, speak with your office/agency technical advisor or take the computer compatibility test (see below).

Just a note that the TICO exam may be written any place, any time the candidate chooses. You need a computer, a brower, an internet connection and a proctor. You can write it at your office, in your home or elsewhere--it is up to you. As a matter of convenience, TICO and CITC have also arranged for Proctored Venues where candidates may write the exam, if they so choose. Visit the Proctored Venue page and contact the schools directly to make arrangements.

If you are writing in a group atmosphere, then the person who is in charge of the group must confirm the availability and working order of the equipment to be used.

The minimum recommended computer equipment for writing the exam is:

  • An Internet connection
  • One of the following Browsers:
    • Internet Explorer 5.5 or greater
    • Netscape 6.0 or higher
    • Firefox 1.0 or higher
  • Screen size requirements:
    • Screen resolution of 800 X 600 (which is standard size for most computers) or greater
  • Test the compatibility of your computer(s) by going to the ASI Test Site at http://asitest.ca/asi-template.htm Click on Support at the bottom of the page, and then click on 'Compatibility'. This feature checks the computer system to make sure it is compatible for running the on-line test.

9)

Write the exam on the selected date.

  • Cancellations or date changes received in writing 8 or more days before the scheduled exam writing will be processed without any fee attached.
  • Cancellations or date changes within 5 days of the scheduled exam date, or on the date itself, are subject to a $24.00 (+ Applicable Taxes) administration fee.
  • No Shows must re-register for the exam. No refunds are available however, CITC will consider situations on a case-by-case basis where a Doctor's note is submitted within 2 business days of the scheduled exam date or in cases where extreme weather conditions are involved.

10)

Wait for the Results: Results will be mailed (via Canada Post) to the person who wrote the exam, usually within 10 business days after the exam writing date. Please note that the time to submit the Third Party Authorization Form  is when you submit the exam registration form. Once the exam is written, it is the candidate's responsibility to report any Pass/Fail results, as the need dictates.

  • All results are reported as either Pass or Fail.
  • To read more about "the pass mark", please visit the FAQ on the Exam.

a)

Pass: If you receive a Pass Letter, keep the original and make a copy for your manager/supervisor. You must show the original at the time you present the copy, in order to verify its authenticity. We strongly recommend that you do not give away the original copy.

After June 30th, 2009, the registrant will be required to provide proof that all staff have complied with TICO's Education Standard.

b)

Fail: If you receive a letter indicating that you were unsuccessful in writing the exam, it will be accompanied by a list of the categories in which more study may be required.

  • Consult the "re-writes" section to see when you may register to write the exam again.
  • There is no limit to the number of times a person may re-write the exam.
  • The fee to register for a re-write of the exam is $24.00 plus taxes for each re-write.
