Q Why is CITC involved in this?
A

CITC, the Canadian Institute of Travel Counsellors, is the Canadian travel industry's educational trade association, with expertise in training programs, training manuals, and testing.

CITC's experience, garnered through 42 years of training, includes the provision of seminars, webinars, workshops, educational conferences, distance learning courses, the National Certification Programs (CTC and CTM), as well as managing the BC Travel Insurance program and the Saskatchewan Travel Insurance Study Guide. CITC is an independent non-profit organization.

CITC has been contracted by TICO to administer the TICO Education Standards program.

Q How will CITC be sharing information with TICO as the program moves forward?
A

CITC will be working on behalf of TICO to administer the Education Standards program. When an industry member passes the requisite exam, that person will receive a letter from the CITC office verifying that he or she has passed the exam and is therefore compliant with the Standard. The person then takes the original documentation, along with a copy, and presents the copy to the agency supervisor or manager.

CITC will be providing information to TICO, on request, regarding registration information, verification of an individual passing the exam, on trends and percentages of people passing or failing the exam. CITC's database records are secure and CITC is bound by the Privacy Act to use records only for the purpose for which they were intended.

Q I already have my CTC or CTM designation – does this exempt me ?
A

No. The CTC and CTM designation have nothing to do with the TICO Education Standards. Every person in Ontario who is working for a retail travel agency and is selling travel services or providing travel advice to the public must, by law, meet the industry's Education Standards by July 1, 2009. The CTC and CTM are national designations, based on the National Occupational Standards for the profession of 'Travel Counsellor'.

Q The Regulation refers to "Certification" – does this mean I have to have my CTC designation to sell travel as of July 1, 2009?
A

No. While the term "certification" is a bit confusing, both CITC and TICO-and now you – understand that CITC professional Certification (which is a national program that leads to the CTC and CTM designations) has nothing to do with the required TICO Certification.

The Study Manual has been commissioned by TICO and is supervised by TICO. The TICO course is NOT the CITC entry-level program, nor does it have anything to do with a CITC knowledge exam or any CTC or CTM requirements. It is a totally different ball game.

Q I already have my CTC or CTM designation – does the new Certification make my designation irrelevant?
A

No. As in the answer above, the CTC and CTM have nothing to do with the TICO Education Standards. Remember that the CTC and CTM are national designations, based on the National Occupational Standards. TICO's Education Standards program is Ontario-based, reflecting specific provincial requirements.
